Make Your Home's Storage Space Shine

Nothing says this house doesn’t have enough storage space like overstuffed closets and cabinets

Yes, buyers really do look in the closets and cabinets. When people are shopping for a new home, you can expect that most will peer into your closets, cabinets, pantry, and other storage areas to ensure that your home has sufficient storage space. One of the most effective ways you can get your home ready for the sales market is to reduce the amount of items in your storage space. When a potential buyer opens your bedroom closet and sees enough space between the hanging clothes that it would be easy to add a few more articles of clothing, that sends a very strong message that your home has ample closet space.

Ideally you want every storage area in your home to have enough room to easily add a few more additional items. Is there room in the pantry to unload the groceries? Is there room in the kitchen cabinets to put away the clean dishes? Is there room in your built-in shelving to add a few new books? If not, you’ll want to declutter any jam-packed storage spaces before you put your house on the market. If you’ve lived in your home for several years or more, chances are that you’ve accumulated a number of unused or rarely used belongings. These should be the first thing to pack up. If you cannot bear to part with these items , the best thing to do is pack them up, label the boxes, and place them in an offsite storage site. This will actually save you time later on when you’re ready to move.

If this task feels overwhelming to you physically or emotionally, we recommend enlisting the help of a supportive friend or family member. There are also professional moving companies and professional home stagers who specialize in decluttering homes before sale. All of our agents are well-experienced in this process and are happy to give you further advice and excellent recommendations on how to best prepare your home so it shines.
