PNC Festival of Lights at Cincinnati Zoo: The beauty of 3 million LED lights will transform the Cincinnati Zoo into a “Wild Wonderland” for the 37th annual event. Now until January 4.

Antique Christmas: The Taft Museum of Art. View Christmas treasures from the 19th and early 20th century in this delightfully mesmerizing annual display. Now until January 5.

Christmas Nights of Lights: At Coney Island. An amazing light show synchronized to both traditional and rocking holiday music heard through your car radio. Now until January 5.

Santa’s House on the Levee: Children receive special time with Santa in his beautiful house on the banks of the Ohio River with dazzling Downtown Cincinnati views. Now until December 24.

Holiday Junction Featuring the Duke Energy Holiday Trains: Explore 9,000 square feet of trains at the Cincinnati Museum Center, Union Terminal- including displays from the 1900’s and 1930’s. Now until January 5.

New Year’s Eve at Music Hall: Frank and Ella: Ring in a new decade with the timeless music of Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra. December 31.

Winterfest at King’s Island: Join Snoopy’s Rockin’ Countdown Party and finish the night with fireworks at the stroke of midnight. Select nights through to December 31

Oakley Family New Year’s Eve: Enjoy a family friendly New Year’s Eve festivities from 7 to 9 pm.  Rozzi Fireworks at 8 pm.. December 31

New Year’s Eve Blast: Ring in the New Year at Fountain Square with thousands of Greater Cincinnatians. Dancing, grub, games, ice skating, and fireworks. December 31. This is a FREE event.

North Pole Express: Experience the magic of a train ride with Santa Claus. These one hour holiday train rides happening now through December 28.

New Year’s Eve at the Madison: One of the region’s largest NYE bash events. This is a big time party. December 31.

FINE ARTS

The Cincinnati Art Museum presents Treasures of the Spanish World; Courtesy of the Hispanic Society of America in New York City, this is an amazing collection from the Roman occupation up through early 20th century paintings. Now until January 19, 2020.

This month’s Art After Dark event is on Wednesday, November 27, the night before Thanksgiving. The theme is Girl Power!  It’s a celebration of the current exhibit; Women Breaking Boundaries which is on view through April 12, 2020.

CONCERTS

November 22: Spyro Gyra, one of the most popular jazz fusion bands of the 1980’s, performs their catalog of hits at the Ludlow Garage.

November 22, 23: Houndmouth comes to Southgate House Revival for two shows.  (See their performance at Bonnaroo in 2013.)

November 23: The pure voice a-cappella phenomenon; Straight No Chaser weaves vocal magic in two shows at The Taft.

November 30 & December 1: The CSO performs Tchaikovsky’s Symphony #1 and Schuman Piano Concerto in beautiful Music Hall.

December 4: Folk musician Livingston Taylor continues to tour after 50 years and can be seen at the 20th Century Theater in Oakley.

December 6 & 7: Schumann’s Paradise and the Peri tells the powerful story of a fallen angel’s attempts to return to heaven. Music Hall.

December 13: The amazingly talented Will Kimbrough  (2004 instrumentalist of the year), plays Southgate House Revival.

December 16: Country musician Jeremy Pinnell hales from Elsmere Kentucky. Catch him on the rise at Southgate House Revival.

December 19: 1980’a Alt band 10000 Maniacs sans Natale Merchant performs at Ludlow Garage.

THEATER

November 9 – January 5:  2 Pianos, 4 Hands, a duet of life and laughter will bring a big fat smile to your face!  Playhouse in the Park.

November 22 – December 7: Marjorie Prime. The movie was released in 2017.  See the story told live at the Falcon Theatre.

December 4 – January 4: Prince Ivan learns to see inner beauty in this modern, musical version of The Frog Princess.  Ensemble Theatre.

December 7, 8, 13, 14, 15: Charlie Brown ChristmasThis children’s of all ages favorite happens at The Taft.

November 16 – January 4: Cincinnati Zoo Festival of Lights. Three million LED lights, giant lanterns, Fiona- it must be a zoo fest!

November 23: Light Up The Levee. Santa arrives in a helicopter to see the lighting of a 50 foot tree with 14 million lights. An afterparty features food, beverages and live music.

December 6, 7: Christmas Saengerfest. See award-winning choirs perform at six different locations. Shop holiday markets. Tour churches, hall, and brewery. Beer from Christian Moerlein and food from Taste of Belgium.

The Taft Museum of Art presents The Poetry of Nature; paintings that reveal the natural wonders that sparked the first, home-grown artistic movement in the United States. The American landscape inspired a group of 19th-century artists to create paintings that present nature as spiritually renewing and culturally defining. Composing their ideal visions of the landscape in their studios, these artists filled their canvases with majestic mountains, tranquil valleys, enchanting forests, shimmering lakes, and luminous skies. Now until January 12, 2020.

Join the spooky fun celebrating Halloween at Art After Dark at the Cincinnati Art Museum on Friday, October 25. Theme: Tormented Souls. Music from Andres Bautista DJ AB, dance performances from Pones, food for purchase, specialty cocktails, docent-led tours with Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, planet and star gazing with Cincinnati Observatory and free admission to special exhibitions.

CONCERTS

October 24-29: CSO performs Brahms Third Symphony. Included is the Haydn Symphony No. 44 and Strauss’ Death and Transfiguration.

October 26: Trisha Yearwood, has been a country music star since her debut single She’s in Love with the Boy. See her at The Taft Theatre.

October 30: Boz Scaggs is still touring and coming to The Taft.

November 1: Rumours of Fleetwood Mac. The wildly popular Rumors album is reprised at The Taft with the original musicians (mostly).

November 1: For something different, check out Asleep at the Wheel, at Memorial Hall. Their most popular song thus far: The Letter That Johnny Walker Read.

November 9: Wilco, featuring Jeff Tweedy, performs at The Taft.

November 9: Shemekia Copeland, top blues guitarist and singer comes to Memorial Hall.

November 13: Chris Thiele, host of Live from Here on NPR is coming to Memorial Hall. Chris is best known for acoustic folk and progressive bluegrass.

November 19: Elvis Costello will be coming to The Taft, so mark your calendars!

THEATER

November 8 – 24: Mariemont Players presents Broadway Bound, a laugh out loud comedy by Neil Simon.

November 15 – December 7: The Merry Wives of Windsor and Sir John Falstaff mix it up at CincyShakes.

November 16: Elf on a Shelf. When Scout Elf is sent to a disconnected family struggling to rediscover Christmas spirit, he’s got to find a way off the shelf and into their hearts. The Taft.

November 22 – December 21: Puffs, Magic, sports and a battle against evil in a hilarious new play at Know Theater.

DESIGNBUILD cincy

Any current or future homeowner will find the DESIGNBUILD cincy show a worthwhile experience. It’s the only curated showcase of design, craftsmanship, and luxury shopping. Study of a Male Nude, Separate Study of his Head, 1537-1538, Michelangelo

The Cleveland Museum of Art presents  Michelangelo: Mind of the Master which brings to the United States for the first time, a group of drawings by Michelangelo. These are courtesy of the remarkable collection of the Teylers Museum (Haarlem, The Netherlands), which was formed in the 18th century. This, in part from the collection of Queen Christina of Sweden (1626–1689). Additional drawings from the collections of the Cleveland Museum of Art and the J. Paul Getty Museum round out the display. Explore Michelangelo’s methods and major projects, as well as the fascinating history of the ownership after his death. September 22, 2019 to January 5, 2020.

ChimaTEK: Hybridization Machine, 2013, Saya Woolfalk

Now through October 27, CAC will be showing A Cabinet of Anticipation: Saya Woolfalk. Born in Gifu City, Japan to a mixed race family marrying Asian and African American heritage, Saya Woolfalk lives, works, and performs the provocative concept of cultural hybridity. Her trans-national background informs colorful, multi-disciplinary work which explores the future of racial and cultural cross-pollination. Marrying totemic iconography with technicolor surrealism, science fiction and fantasy, Woolfalk imagines a fictional race of women able to alter their genetic make-up and merge with the natural world.

Get Into The Groove is the 80’s theme for Art After Dark at the Cincinnati Art Museum on Friday, September 27 from 5 -9 pm. Bust out your spandex, leg warmers and acid wash jeans!  popular silent disco is back, and this time, we’re kicking it 80’s style. Enjoy food for purchase from Fusian and Busken Bakery, specialty cocktails and docent-led tours. Free admission.

September 20-21: Richard Strauss’ Alpine Symphony leads us to the summit of experience and music from Cincinnati native Bryce Dessner will take you home. At the Summit: Strauss + Dessner at Music Hall presented by CSO.

September 21: Crash Test Dummies reunite for North American tour to celebrate the 25th anniversary of seminal album God Shuffled His Feet at Memorial Hall.

September 25: Grammy award-winning artist Patty Griffin, one of the most consequential singer-songwriters of her generation, will be performing with Scott Miller at 20th Century Theatre.

September 27: Taft Theatre presents Tommy Emmanuel, an Australian-American guitarist who is highly respected for his unique fingerstyle technique and energetic performances.

September 28 – 29: Join the celebration of Beethoven’s 250th birthday with the CSO and violin phenomenon Anne-Sophie Mutter as they play the composer’s beloved Violin Concerto at Music Hall.

October 2: Memorial Hall presents  Lee Ann Womack who will perform songs from her new album The Lonely, The Lonesome & The Gone –  a breathtaking unique hybrid of country, soul, gospel, and blues.

October 4-6: Marvel at the music in this incredible  journey of America’s Wonders in 3D presented by Cincinnati Pops Orchestra at Music Hall.

October 15: Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter  Macy Gray brings her soulful R&B sound and funky spirit to Ludlow Garage.

October 18: The Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra and Vocal Arts Ensemble join forces to present three choral works by Vivaldi and Fauré that will showcase the acoustical splendor of the Christ Church Cathedral.

THEATER

September 13 – 29: Mariemont Players presents Is He Dead? a comedy adapted by David Ives.

September 19 – 22: Xavier University presents The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time at Gallagher Student Center Theatre.

September 26 – October 13:  Incline Theater presents Rock of Ages, a five Tony Award-nominated musical homage to the 80’s.

October 11 – November 2: This Halloween season, murder, mayhem, and mutilation abound, as Cincinnati Shakespeare presents Titus Andronicus.

Oct 12 – 13 & 18-20: The Children’s Theatre presents the world-premier musical adaptation Casper, the Friendly Musical at Taft Theatre.

Jane Avril, 1893, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

The Taft Museum of Art in Cincinnati will be exhibiting L’Affichomania: The Passion for French Posters through September 14Meant to stop people in their tracks with bold colors and seductive imagery, French advertising posters of the turn of the 20th century ultimately became highly collectible works of art.  Explore the work of five innovative artists: Jules Chéret, Eugène Grasset, Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen, Alphonse Mucha, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.

Now through May 3, 2020,  Elemental Calder will be showing at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Alexander Calder (American, 1898–1976) revolutionized sculpture by inviting unseen forces of the natural world to participate in his art. The works in this exhibition manifest the ways the elements—including the movement of the sea and the blowing of the wind—provided both subject matter and inspiration for many of Calder’s mobiles. As Jean-Paul Sartre once noted of his works, “One of Calder’s objects is like the sea and equally spellbinding: always beginning over again, always new.”

All Good Things Must End is the bittersweet theme for Art After Dark at Cincinnati Art Museum on Friday, August 30 from 5 – 10 pm. Celebrate the end of summer and special exhibition No Spectators: The Art of Burning Man during this month’s Art After Dark. Enjoy live music from Triiiibe, food for purchase from Revolution Rotisserie, salads and desserts from Dewey’s Pizza and Graeter’s Ice Cream, docent-led tours and free admission to special exhibitions No Spectators: The Art of Burning Man and Kimono: Refashioning Contemporary Style.

September 9: Glen Hansard, founder of  the Irish indie-rock band The Frames and star of the award-winning film Once, at Taft Theatre.

September 12: Revered for their unique blend of New Orleans brass band, funk, jazz, soul, and hip hop, Rebirth Brass Band plays Memorial Hall.

September 13:  Taft Theatre presents a special evening with Gladys Knight, the “Empress of Soul” and R&B and gospel legend.

September 15:  Four-time Grammy Award winning post-modern blues musician and American treasure, Keb’ Mo’ performs an intimate, acoustic show at  Memorial Hall.

September 19: Known for their unique vocal harmonies, the influential folk-rock music duo, Indigo Girls (Amy Ray and Emily Saliers) perform at Taft Theatre.

September 20: The Mavericks bring their legendary sound – influenced by Tex-Mex, neo-traditional country music, Latin, and rockabilly – to Taft Theatre.

September 22: Internationally renowned trumpet soloist and Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra member, Ashley Hall gives a special matinee performance at Memorial Hall.

Portrait of Madame Augustine Roulin and Baby Marcelle, 1888, by Vincent Willem van Gogh (Dutch, 1853–90), 1950-92-22

Now through August 18, The Impressionist’s Eye will be showing at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Peer over the shoulder of Claude Monet, Mary Cassatt, Vincent van Gogh, and others as they make their indelible mark on canvas, paper, and bronze. Best known as oil painters, the artists in this tight-knit group actually moved fluidly from one medium to another, supporting and inspiring one another. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see a broad range of Impressionist sculpture, painting, and works on paper shown together.

Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati will be exhibiting Creatures: When Species Meet through August 18. This compelling show features contemporary works of art inspired by interactions with living creatures outside of humankind.

Life’s a Beach is the playful theme for Art After Dark at Cincinnati Art Museum on Friday, July 26 from 5 – 10 pm. Enjoy live music from The Cliftones, food for purchase from Eli’s BBQ and Macaron Bar and free admission to special exhibitions No Spectators: The Art of Burning Man and Kimono: Refashioning Contemporary Style.

Now is a Great Time to Explore Our Area Farmers Markets

Over the past couple of decades there has been a renewed interest in the foods we eat and a genuine desire to know more about the origins of our food and how it was produced. This interest has fueled a rapid rise in the popularity of local farmers markets. More and more communities in the Cincinnati area have their own neighborhood market, making it convenient to shop locally for food and other goods. These markets provide a wonderful opportunity for shoppers to meet the farmers who grow their food, learn about how their food was produced, support local business, and build relationships with friends and neighbors.
